Madison Porter

South Lyon High School

Class of 2019

My name is Madison Porter, I am 17 years old, currently enrolled as a senior at South Lyon High School. I was born and raised in South Lyon, Michigan. There are 5 people in my family; my parents, Lorie and Jim Porter, my 14 year old sister, Renee, my 19 year old sister, Brittney and myself. I also have an English Black Lab named Finley. I am one of the luckiest 17 year old I know. Throughout my life, I have had to opportunity to travel around the world due to my dad's job as a Pilot. Traveling has become a very special thing in my life. I have observed many different cultures from the places I travel to and I would never take these experiences for granted. Most of my time is spent with my friends or playing sports. I have played softball since I was eight, but no longer play for a travel team, only on my high school team where we plan on competing in states this year. After High school, I plan on attending Central Michigan University where I am going to study Broadcasting and Cinematic Arts.

Work Experiences image
I work at Benito's Pizza in South Lyon as a cashier. I have been working there for two years now and have worked my way up to learning how to do the other positions such as taking pizza out of the oven, putting toppings on the pizza, making salads, and doing the dishes. A lot of people don't realize how much work goes into a pizza business, but it has taught many working skills.I have learned how to work fast when also worrying about the quality, it has taught me communications skills through talking to all different kinds of customers: mean, nice, quiet, confused. But most importantly it has taught me responsibility because I am responsible for making sure the orders are taken correctly and the money is all accounted for.

Recently my employers complimented me on how hard and dedicated a worker I am. They love how I just get the job done fast with little to no mistakes. I think that if you have a job and if you are getting paid for it, you should try your best because there is no reason to be lazy about it, especially if you have nothing else to do.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

In 10 years, I want to have a stable job, one that I really love doing, no matter if it has anything to do with broadcasting or not. I also see myself being happily married and having kids, at most three. I imagine being very happy and very close with my sisters who would hopefully be married by then, also staying close with my parents who probably won't live in Michigan anymore, but we would see them at least once a year.

What motivates you to do your best?

The thing that motivates me to do my best is the thought of getting things done well and being accomplished and proud of myself. If I am going to do something, I will do it to my best ability so it is done right the first time.

Give me an example of a time that you felt you went above and beyond the call of duty at work.

An example of a time that I went above and beyond at work would be staying later than my scheduled time to help out my co-workers or boss when we were busy. I also go above and beyond at work because I will help my boss train new employees when she doesn't have the time.

What has been your proudest moment?

My proudest moment was getting a job at the age of 16 when I didn't have my license or a car yet I still managed to get to work on time, whether it be walking or asking my parents or neighbor for a ride, and keeping my grades up. I also was the first child in my family of five to get a job and open up a bank account and a Roth IRA to save money for my future.

If you could choose one superhero power, what would it be and why?

The superhero power that I would choose would be the power to fly because you can travel anywhere you want without having to worry about it taking too long or gas money or traffic. I also love flying on airplanes so having the power to fly would make me feel like I'm on an airplane all the time. It would also be cool to be able to see the world from a birds view, but not too high like a plane.

What is one area of your life that you feel needs improvement?

One area of mine that I feel needs the most improvement is knowing when and where the time is right to say certain thought. Sometimes I express my opinion or say a statement that hurts someone else's feelings because I didn't check my surroundings or think before I decided to say what was on my mind.
